Are you a person who works remotely, while traveling to new places? If so, then you are a so-called digital nomad!

As a digital nomad, you have the flexibility to create your own work schedule, free of the standard nine-to-five timetable. This lifestyle allows you to travel more frequently, and experience different countries and cultures.

If you are looking forward to escaping the routine of everyday life, while keeping a well-paying job and simultaneously getting a taste of life in majestic Italy, then you might want to consider applying for a digital nomad visa.

Luckily for you, in March 2022, the government of Italy introduced the digital nomad visa for non-EU citizens. This new permit is specifically aimed at non-EU residents who ‘carry out highly-qualified work activities through the use of technological tools that allow them to work remotely, autonomously, or for a company that is not a resident in the territory of the Italian State.

It is therefore a rather wide definition which seems to cover both the self-employed, and people who work under an employment contract , either for an employer/client based in Italy or  outside the country. 

The characteristics of this new visa are as follows:

• you will not be required to obtain a Nulla Osta (work authorization) prior to entering the country
• it is issued independent of the annual entry quotas established by the Decreto Flussi
• the entry visa is obtained by applying at the consulate in your country of residence
• after your arrival in Italy, you will apply for a permit to stay that will have a duration of 1 year
• the permit to stay can be renewed and extended after the initial one year period
• you will be obligated to comply with all tax and social security provisions in Italy

A further decree of the relevant Ministries is forthcoming that will complete the details about the procedures, requirements for issuing the stay permit, and procedures for the and renewal.
